Sign-On Statement on Anti-Muslim Rallies Oct. 9th & 10th

Sign-On Statement on Anti-Muslim Rallies Oct. 9th & 10th

As proud Americans and as people of faith and/or supporters of social justice we collectively oppose this weekend’s anti-Muslim protests which are deceivingly named the Global Rally for Humanity. This toxic display of ignorance, fear and intimidation is antithetical to American values.

Several of the individuals leading this effort are calling for protesters to show up armed, in “open carry” fashion. This means that — by design — entire families could be subjected to frightening confrontations with angry, gun wielding protesters.

The Facebook page promoting these events gives very clear instructions: “find a mosque in your area so you can publish the location” (for a protest). By haphazardly encouraging people to organize armed protests, at any random mosque they can find, the organizers have clearly shown the world their agenda. They seek to bully the entire American Muslim community and to suppress religious freedom in the United States.

In response to these hateful rallies we:

  • Oppose the targeting of any faith community.
  • Uphold the constitutional right of all people in the United States to freely practice their religious liberty without fear or harassment.
  • Believe that attacking people because of their faith is a betrayal of our nation’s highest values.
  • Do not consider dividing Americans by their religious identities the behavior of true patriots.
  • Hope that all Americans will embrace mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

These people have a right to demonstrate. However, the manner in which they have chosen to do so sends an ugly message that we reject. Hostility against minorities has always been the exception and not the rule; no matter how loud or outrageous these few aggressive voices are.

We the undersigned reject all forms of violent radicalization, vigilantism and hate crimes. We call on all of our state and local leaders to engage in dialogue to preserve the integrity of our communities and safety of all people.

Sincerely,
