Subject Line: Please reject SB0180!
Dear Senator Kelsey:
I am writing to request that you to reject SB 180 by Sen. Ketron. As introduced, SB 180 is loosely worded and does not define or include adequate protection for houses of worship, nonprofit organizations or other facilities and assets which were established for community service and/or for charitable purposes.
As you know the legislation was drafted by State Senator Ketron and is cosponsored in the Tennessee House by Rep. Matheny. In 2011, Sen. Ketron and Rep. Matheny introduced notorious anti-Muslim legislation that would have made practicing the religion of Islam a felony. Legislative efforts like this garner very negative national attention to Tennessee.
We should not support legislation that overtly or covertly targets religious and ethnic minorities. These bills waste our valuable resources, jeopardize Tennessee’s diverse and welcoming image and distract from the real and pressing challenges our state’s leadership should continue to focus on.
Please REJECT SB 180.
